Is Seagate Worth Buying as Growth Surges but Valuation Stays Rich?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Seagate's revenues surged 61% to $4.23 billion, while earnings reached $7.68 per share in fiscal Q1 2027.
  • Record free cash flow of $1.48 billion and HAMR expansion support growth, with supply allocated through 2028.
  • STX trades at 13.97X forward earnings versus the industry's 9.41X, highlighting valuation and execution risks.

Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX - Free Report) is delivering faster earnings growth, wider margins and record cash generation as data-center demand strengthens. The operating picture is improving quickly, but the stock’s valuation still requires investors to weigh upside from AI-linked storage demand against execution risk.

That makes the buy decision less straightforward than the earnings trend alone suggests. Seagate’s fundamentals support optimism, while valuation and technology-transition risks argue for a selective approach.

Seagate’s Earnings Power Keeps Expanding

Fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenues rose 61% year over year to $4.23 billion. Non-GAAP earnings increased to $7.68 per share from $2.61, while non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 57.8% from 40.1% a year earlier.

Operating leverage was equally notable. Non-GAAP operating margin reached 50.7%, up from 29% in the prior-year quarter, as favorable pricing, product mix and disciplined expenses supported profitability. Free cash flow reached a record $1.48 billion, giving Seagate greater flexibility to reduce debt and return capital.

STX’s Premium Valuation Raises the Bar

Seagate’s forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 13.97 exceeds the Zacks sub-industry’s 9.41. That premium can remain defensible if earnings continue to rise, but it leaves less room for disappointment.

Cloud spending, pricing and HAMR execution therefore carry more weight for the shares. Western Digital Corporation (WDC - Free Report) is also investing in high-capacity HDDs for AI and cloud infrastructure, highlighting both the strength of storage demand and the competitive pressure Seagate faces in serving hyperscale customers.

Seagate’s HAMR Roadmap Adds Long-Term Visibility

Seagate’s Mozaic 4 platform supports capacities of up to 44TB and is ramping with two leading cloud service providers. Management expects HAMR to account for roughly half of the nearline exabyte shipment run rate exiting calendar 2026, with Mozaic 4 representing about half of those HAMR shipments.

Longer-term visibility is also improving. Most nearline exabyte supply is allocated through calendar 2028, with some cloud agreements extending through 2030. Mozaic 5, which is designed to exceed 50TB, remains targeted for qualification shipments toward the end of calendar 2027.

STX’s Risks Keep the Buy Case From Being Simple

The technology transition still carries execution risk. Nearline shipments increased only 1% sequentially in the September quarter as Seagate staged Mozaic 4 products ahead of customer qualifications. Delays, weaker yields or manufacturing inefficiencies could limit capacity growth or pressure margins.

Customer concentration adds another risk because Data Center generated 81% of quarterly revenues. Micron Technology, Inc. (MU - Free Report) is expanding high-capacity data-center SSD offerings for AI, cloud and hyperscale workloads, underscoring the broader competition for storage spending across HDD and flash architectures.

Seagate’s Ratings Support a Selective Buy Case

Seagate’s growth profile remains favorable, but its valuation argues against ignoring execution risk. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), which points to a constructive near-term earnings-estimate backdrop rather than a guarantee of share-price gains.

STX also has a Growth Score of A and Momentum Score of A, along with a VGM Score of B. Those ratings support its growth and momentum characteristics. The Value Score of F is the counterweight, suggesting investors may want to be selective rather than treating the current operating strength as sufficient reason to buy at any price.
